Vaccination programs on livestock farms involve more than the vaccine itself. Experimental swine studies involving African swine fever virus and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus have demonstrated transmission through contaminated or shared needles under study settings. Comparable transmission was not observed with the intradermal needle-free methods examined in those studies.

Removing the shared needle from the vaccination event can therefore reduce the risk associated with one potential route of animal-to-animal transfer. It does not make a livestock facility inherently biosecure. Disease can move through many pathways, so needle-free equipment belongs within a broader approach to sanitation, animal movement, personnel practices, and veterinary health management.

Fewer Needle-Related Hazards for Animals and Workers

Broken needles present a separate concern in food-animal production. A needle may bend or break during use, creating the possibility of a retained fragment and potential implications for animal care, carcass quality, food safety, and downstream handling.

Needle-free equipment avoids the possibility of a vaccination needle breaking and remaining in tissue. For livestock teams moving through large numbers of animals, it also eliminates the exposed vaccination needle as a source of accidental sharps injury during that task.

This can be particularly relevant in swine facilities, where animal movement, close working quarters, and repetitive vaccination events can increase employees’ exposure to needle sticks. Other occupational hazards remain, but reducing contact with sharps can address one familiar source of risk for farm staff and veterinary teams.

Potential Animal Welfare Benefits

Animal response is another factor attracting interest in needle-free vaccination, particularly in commercial swine production.

A piglet study comparing intramuscular needle vaccination with intradermal needle-free vaccination found differences in behavioral responses associated with aversion. The needle-free intradermal group showed fewer signs such as retreat attempts and certain vocalizations.

Those findings are specific to the intradermal method evaluated and should not be interpreted to mean every needle-free vaccination is painless or less stressful. Animal response can vary with the vaccine, delivery route, device, age, handling, and other factors.

Still, the findings suggest that delivery method can play a role in the animal’s experience. For livestock professionals, welfare can be weighed alongside biosecurity, employee safety, and the practical demands of working with large groups.

Benefits of Needle-Free Livestock Vaccination in High-Throughput Settings

The benefits of needle-free livestock vaccination can also extend to the logistics of large vaccination events.

With no individual needle to change or manage between animals, crews have one fewer needle-related interruption as they move through a group. In high-volume swine facilities, even small differences in handling and equipment movement can become meaningful over hundreds or thousands of animals.

Equipment configuration can also add flexibility. Depending on the device, vaccine supply may be accommodated through bottle-mounted or draw-off configurations, including arrangements suited to larger-volume vaccine containers. This gives livestock teams different equipment setups to match the scale and physical layout of their facilities.

Needle-free and conventional equipment can also coexist within the same animal health program. Where traditional delivery remains appropriate, products such as reusable syringes for livestock continue to serve important roles across species and use cases.

Needle-Free Technology Still Requires Proper Oversight

Needle-free equipment changes certain aspects of vaccine delivery, but it does not eliminate the responsibilities surrounding veterinary vaccination equipment.

Sanitation, staff training, equipment care and maintenance, manufacturer requirements, vaccine storage, product-label compliance, and veterinary oversight remain essential. The equipment must also be compatible with the vaccine, species, and labeled route involved.

That balance is important when discussing the potential advantages of needle-free vaccination. The technology can address several concerns associated with physical needles while fitting into—not replacing—the larger animal health and biosecurity framework.
